Owen V. Johnson (In Memoriam)
Owen V. Johnson posthumously received the Slovak Studies Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.

Owen V. Johnson, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University’s School of Journalism, Department of History and School of Global & International Studies, passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2022. His departure left a profound void in the field of Central and Eastern European Studies. A prolific writer, he published numerous books, scholarly articles and book reviews on journalism history (including Ernie Pyle), international communications, and Russian and East European area mass media.
Johnson’s contributions to Slovak studies were immeasurable. He was one of the founding members of the Slovak Studies Association and served on the SSA Executive Committee from 1980-82 and as president from 1988-1990. His meticulous research, insightful analyses, and command of the Slovak language (especially for a non-native speaker) brought to light crucial aspects of Slovak history, literature, and culture formerly unknown to the English-speaking world. His first book, Slovakia 1918-1938: Education and the Making of a Nation (Boulder, CO: East European Monographs, 1985), remains an indispensable resource for scholars and students alike.
Johnson also received prestigious awards and positions on both sides of the Atlantic during and after the end of the Cold War. The following are just a small representation of his most recent accolades:
