Book Talk: The Slovak Question – Saturday May 3, 2025

On May 3, 2025, Michael Cude will discuss his book “The Slovak Question: A Transatlantic Perspective, 1914-1948” in an online event. The work explores Slovak national identity’s development and its interactions with American Slovaks and policymakers, highlighting the complexities of Czechoslovakia’s identity crisis. This book won the Slovak Studies Association’s Best Book Prize in 2022.

2024 SSA Best Book Prize: Denisa Nešťáková

Denisa Nešťáková won the 2024 SSA Best Book Prize for her book “Be Fruitful and Multiply: Slovakia’s Family Planning Under Three Regimes (1918-1965).” The unanimous decision praised her thorough research on family planning’s societal impacts in Slovakia and its relevance to European history. The prize amounts to $200.

The 24th Annual Czech and Slovak Studies Workshop, which will be held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on April 25-26, 2025, welcomes papers on Czech and Slovak topics. The deadline for submitting proposals is Dec. 18, 2024.
